"I remember that one of Grandma's homes in her later years was the Beach House in Ventura, CA. She lived there with Edna and Dale during the winter months. Early one morning in January, 1983 at about 4:30 am in the midst of a storm and a high tide and high surf the Pacific ocean broke through the windows of the house, flooding and ravaging the downstairs. It was dark and it was wet and windy and noisy and Grandma's bedroom was downstairs!! Edna, Dale and Grandma were all very frightened. Bill and I arrived about 3 hours later to do what was needed to shore up the house to keep it from being further damaged and destroyed with the next onslaught of high tide due in 3-4 hours more.
"We arrived shortly before Grandma left. I remember talking to her. She had a red blouse on, Grandma loved red. And she related to me her fears and her desire to get out as quickly as possible and get back to the Rocky Mountains!! She said, I won't be back! It's too dangerous here. She wasn't due to go home to Utah for another month or two at least. But she wanted to get on the first flight available, in fact she was INSISTENT! Dale sort of laughed a little and said there was no way of persuading her to stay another minute!! They left to take her to the airport and she never did return to the Beach House!
"That storm was the worst one that we have weathered at the Beach House in all the years that we have owned it. We bought the house in 1979. If not for Bill's knowledge of what to do and his expertise in getting it done QUICKLY, we would have lost the house at that time. Some along our stretch of beach did and many sustained extensive damage."
